Clarification

Thank you to those of you who have commented and wished me luck.

The divorce is not yet final, and the house isn't up for sale just yet. The next few months are going to be about finishing up Christmas presents and preparing the house for sale. That means getting rid of things, repairs and painting.

The actual move requires:

  • A finalized divorce decree requiring the selling of the home OR
  • CatDaddy deciding he wants to live here and buying out Momcat's share
  • Basic repairs of things such a plumbing, torn carpet, missing fence posts, etc.
  • Painting and staging
  • Selling the house (average time on market here is four months)
  • Purchasing or renting a new house...which means traveling to North Carolina on a few occasions
It's going to be a long process. Thanks for understanding why we're taking some time off to deal with it, and it will be lovely to visit with all of you again in January.

Going on Hiatus

The Quilting Cat is going on hiatus until mid-January.

With holidays approaching and things that we're doing to prepare the house for moving, not much quilting is getting done around here.

I wish all of you a blessed Thanksgiving, a happy Christmas and a joyful New Year!

Even though Momcat may be scurrying around for awhile, the rest of us are settling in for our winter naps.

Dirty Dishes Beware!

I am loving our new knitted dishcloths!

I made sure that Momcat had to chase the ball of yarn a bit. What can I say?

Ball of yarn + Piwacket = havoc

Momcat hasn't blocked the dishcloths yet. After she does, they'll square up nicely.

Wanna make your own?  This pattern couldn't be easier.

Use all cotton yarn (we used Sugar 'n Cream), don't worry about gauge, use size 7 or 8 needles.

Cast on 4 stitches.

Row 1: Knit 2, YO, knit the rest of the row.
Repeat Row 1 until you have 44 stitches on the needle.

Row 2: Now you'll start decreasing. Knit 1, K2Tog, YO, K2Tog, Knit to the end of the row.

Keep repeating row 2 until you have only 4 stitches left on the needle.

Bind off, weave in the ends and you're done!

Have fun creating for 15 minutes.

Momcat the Knitwit

MOMCAT'S GONE WOOL CRAZY

Momcat is in a beginners' knitting class. Last night she finished the body of a scarf. I tried to help by making biscuits on the soft yarn, but she didn't seem to appreciate my efforts.  And she had the nerve to shoo Sundance away when Sunny was trying help guide the knitting needle.

Despite this, I'm pleased with Momcat. Amid the occasional dropped stitch, accidental increase or decrease, and tension problem, I think the scarf has turned out very well, especially for a first effort.  Next step is to weave in the ends and add corner tassels.

Maggie's Toys

Maggie has a very nice selection of toys. She really likes the soft ones with squeakers. Some of her favorites are at the toy hospital.

Maggie picked out the giraffe and monkey herself when Momcat took her on a field trip to PetSmart. That was when she was a little puppy. Maggie is now about 9 months old.

Cruelly, Momcat brought home the black cat a couple of weeks before Halloween. She found it funny that there was a squeaker in the cat's bottom. I was not amused.

You can see how forlorn Maggie is as she waits for her favorite toys. She's stuck chewing on a yukky rawhide bone that was found under the sofa covered in dust bunnies. Even I have to feel a little sorry for her.

Hopefully, Mr. Giraffe, MonkeyBones and Spooky will be discharged from the toy hospital soon.

Have you taken 15 minutes to create something today? Now's your chance!

A Winner is Picked!

I Had a Tough Time...

picking a winner for my final birthday giveaway. Being 7 is a lot of fun!

First, Butch started crowding me.  Get outta here, Butch!!

Then I had to stick my nose way down in the bowl a bunch of times, circling around it each time I did so.

Momcat was getting a little fed up with me at this point. She's home sick (not with the flu, but some other yukky virus taking down the teachers and kids) and is cranky.

Finally, I flipped out a paper. Momcat opened it up, and the winner is.....

Jamie Mueller!

Congratulations, Jamie!  Email your snail mail address to me and I'll see that your prize is sent. (I think poor Shellie is still waiting for her snowman applique'....it'll get there in time, Shellie!)

Knitting

Trouble and Maggie attacked the yarn. I attacked the needles. Momcat's struggling with trying to figure out how to keep the yarn tension just right.  But I think her first couple of rows are pretty good. She has to knit a row and then purl a row. She says knitting is a lot easier than purling.

Here are the books she's using at home. Very nice diagrams in each of them.

 Thank you!

Thank you to all of you who have either left a comment or sent an email giving me encouragement about the new direction life is taking us. You've all been so kind. I hope to get in touch with you individually, but this will have to suffice for now. Your support and taking the time to share your own stories has been a blessing.

When our house gets put on the market, or sometime before, there's a lot of things that we'll want to sell. There will be patterns, books, fabric, cross-stitch kits and household items. We'll have an online moving sale accessible through both blogs (this one and Mustard Seed Living). I promise some great deals.

Now back to bed to cuddle with Momcat some more.

GIVEAWAY CLOSED

Thank you all for celebrating my wonderful birthday!  Giveaway #7 is now closed. I'll need some time to get Momcat typing all the names into Excel, and then you'll get to see me draw out the lucky bean.  Good luck to everyone and stay tuned!

We're Moving!

Momcat says we're moving as soon as she and CatDaddy finalize their divorce. Apparently, that means bad things for us four-legged family members.

I'm hearing words such as:

  • Painting
  • Plumber
  • Carpet cleaning and repair
  • Lots of strange people
  • Cleaning each and every day
  • Decluttering
  • Landscaping
She says we're going somewhere called North Carolina. That sounds like a far, far away place to me.

Momcat met with a thing called a lawyer on Monday, came home very happy but kind of nervous, too. "I had no idea how much paperwork and planning was going to be involved in all of this,"  she said.

Even though she just had me start a Yahoo group, the truth is we won't have time to moderate it. If you had already joined The Crafty Angels, you've received an email from Momcat about it.  Maybe down the road (literally) when we get settled into our new digs and new life, the group could be resurrected.

Piwacket:  Is there catnip in North Carolina?

Momcat:   Of course, sweetie. Catnip can be found everywhere.

Piwacket:  Are Logan, Trouble, Butch and Sundance coming?

Momcat:  I wouldn't leave any of you behind.

Piwacket:  So Maggie is moving with us, too?

Momcat:  Naturally.

Piwacket:  Darn.

Momcat: We probably won't really move until the summer, or about then, anyway. We'll go from being buckeyes to tarheels.

Piwacket: I have no idea what you're talking about. You human beans sometimes say the dumbest things.

Momcat: You may be right, Pi. You just may be right.

Yarn and Needles, Oh Boy!

This just in:  Momcat is taking a beginning knitting class tomorrow night and you know what that means for me?  I'll have balls of yarn to chase!!  Logan and I have already been conspiring about how to find Momcat's yarn stash. Just wait until Butch and Sundance start watching her with the knitting needles clack-clack-clacking. And Trouble?? She'll be in the middle of everything, I'm sure.

Soon to be Quilting AND Knitting Cat??

New Giveaway at Pumpkin Patch Primitives

There is a fantastic Halloween giveaway going on now at Pumpkin Patch Primitives. If you visit, please tell her I sent you.

I Won! I Won!

First of all, I want to thank all of you for joining in my birthday celebration. Many of you have been faithful followers, and some of you have just joined the ride. I regret that I don't have time just yet to respond to each of you personally. Nevertheless, your visits and comments just make my day!

I can't believe I actually won somebody else's giveaway!  I'm very excited.  Niki from Pumpkin Country made this precious cross-stitched jack-o'lantern. I received it a couple of days ago and sent Momcat out last night to get a frame.  Niki, thanks so much for giving us all the chance to win this. We'll enjoy getting it out every autumn!

Maggie, the other kitties and I are certainly hoping that Momcat takes the hint and fetches us some treats.

Did you set your timer to create for 15 minutes today?

Last Giveaway in Birthday Celebration!

Giveaway #7

Thanks to everyone for helping me celebrate my birthday. Are you ready to participate in my final drawing? Remember, you're still eligible to enter the drawing even if you won one of the previous six prizes.

I think I saved the best for last.  I'm giving away this jelly roll friendly quilt pattern, a Garden Inspirations jelly roll by Moda, and a packet of Christmas applique designs!

To be eligible for the drawing (which will be held on Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at noon EST):

  • Leave a comment on this post for 1 entry.
  • Be a follower for a second entry.
  • Post on your blog for a third entry.
  • Link back to me for a fourth entry.
I wish all of you good luck!

CONFETTI

Here's what we're working on.

This quilt is called Confetti and is from a terrific book called Four Patch Frolic.  The quilt calls for 98 four-patch blocks. You can see all of them in strips here on the sewing table. The next step is to even up the strips, then put long sashing strips between the rows.

I'm trying to get Momcat over here to iron. I've found that the ironing board provides me an excellent strategic supervisory advantage. Plus, it keeps me away from you-know-who (picture below mine, also in the sewing room.)

Staying in Shape

I may have mentioned before that Maggie is half-boxer (her other half is black lab, which makes her a full mutt).  We all know that boxers do all kinds of things to maintain their physique. Running (Maggie is great at that), jumping rope (she's an expert at jumping on people and her doghouse), and using the punching bag (named Philip). Here's how Maggie does her push-ups. She's developed her own clever way of getting that upper body strength just so.

(Note from Momcat: Piwacket is high on catnip again. This is just Maggie's funny way of getting off the couch. She drags her upper body down to the floor and looks almost boneless in the rear as her back legs follow her to the floor.)

Have you created for 15 minutes today? If not, get to it!

Hugs,
Piwacket and Linda

New Blog and New Yahoo Group

Momcat has started a new blog. Bear with us as we figure out how to keep my profile information on this one, while allowing her to be herself on her new blog.

The new blog is Mustard Seed Living. Momcat is going to share her thoughts and actions as she goes forward into a new chapter in her life's journey.  It's in its infancy, but then, this is just the beginning.

Also, a few bloggers have expressed interest in creating a Yahoo group for Christian crafters. Momcat/Linda volunteered. If you quilt, cross-stitch, knit, scrapbook, crochet, or do any other kind of craft...and if you believe that those talents come for God for His service, feel free to join us. Thank you especially to Linda of Linda's Lines and Loves for recommending the creation of the group.

We're The Crafty Angels.  Crafty has a couple of fun meanings, not the least of which means creative. Angels are God's messengers. Through our crafts we can bring God's message of love, comfort and reassurance.

Right now the Yahoo group is open. We'll see how it goes and make adjustments along the way.

A Winner and A Sample

#6 GIVEAWAY WINNER IS......

Shellie!!!!  Email me your snail mail address, Shellie and I'll get your snowman applique envelope to you.  Congratulations.

The 7th and Final Giveaway for my birthday celebration will be announced later this week. And it's going to be a big one, so stay tuned.

SHOP SAMPLES

Portugeese has flown away for awhile so that we can work on shop samples. Momcat volunteered for five (what was she thinking!)  Actually, I know what she was thinking. Being paid to sew on very pretty fabric is a good deal.

Here's a list of what we're working on for the store:

  • Confetti (from the book Four Patch Frolic)
  • Crib quilt *
  • Crib organizer *
  • Large pillow *
  • Alhambra
* These are all from a new line called Sugar Biscuit by Wilmington Prints. We're using the manufacturer's patterns. Click here to see the whole precious line.  KT from the shop is doing the set in blue and Momcat is doing the pink set.

ALHAMBRA II

Art Gallery Fabrics has released this new line and Momcat immediately fell in love with it. This is a sample that we're going to keep!  Just take a look at these beautiful fabrics!  Here's a link to the whole line. You can also download the free pattern. Art Gallery Fabrics - Alhambra II

FOOTBALL SEASON

We live in the land of the Bengals, which is generally something of which to be ashamed. If nothing else this season, however, Philip and other fans are seeing excitement as the minutes count down and then the team pulls out a last-second victory.  Momcat and I hate football, so I sleep on Sundays (just like every other day) and Momcat works at the shop. Trouble cuddles up with Philip and keeps him company while the game is on. But she's about as interested in the game as I am.

Go forth and create!

The Wooden Bear makes really cute little applique' patterns, as you can see. Their series of Patternlets are designed to fit into a #10 envelope, so that you can easily mail them to friends.

To enter this Giveaway, leave a comment on this post by Monday, Tuesday, October 13 at noon EST.

Momcat, Maggie and I are going upstairs now to listen to Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz and work on Portugeese some more.

Giveaway #5

I'm sharing my 7th birthday with you by having seven giveaways. We're up to #5.

There's plenty of time for you to make this cute applique'd turkey. I'll provide you with the pattern. In order to win, all you have to do is leave a comment for me on this post. The deadline is 12 p.m. EST, Tuesday, October 6.  Good luck!

What We've Been Working On

Maggie, Momcat and I have been spending a lot of time with geese lately. In fact, instead of Portugal by Moda, I'm calling this quilt Portugeese. There's 188 flying geese blocks and they're all done. You can see the borders on the ironing board, along with the square in a square blocks.

I love the colors of this quilt and hope I can nudge Momcat to make all of her points line up correctly.

Notice Maggie's giraffe on the floor?

We're listening to a really good book while we're sewing. It's by Dean Koontz and is called Brother Odd. It's a little macabre, a lot funny, and very respectful of Christianity. The narrator is terrific, too. Koontz has written a series of books featuring Odd, the main character. I'm looking forward to hearing them all.

The baby pumpkins have arrived. Yesterday Momcat spent some time at an Amish Farmers' Market. She came home with these cute baby pumpkins, delicious pumpkin bars, and oatmeal cookies. She seemed to forget all about us four-legged friends. Harumph!

You know the drill. Go be creative for 15 minutes!

Congratulations to Agent 99

You've won our Week #4 Giveaway of all the scrapbooking materials. Now you'll have a spot to put those pictures and notations for all your creations! Send me an email with your snail mail address.

Sundance picked your name out of the bowl.

She's heading back to the bowl for more. Almost as if there was a treat hidden underneath all those papers. Hmmmm.

Christmas Table Runner

Sundance is also serving as our model on the Christmas Table Runner we finished last night.  This was SO easy to make.

Happy Sewing,

Shop Top Done

This is a Nine Patch Star top that Momcat, Maggie and I just finished for the shop. I love the cheerful yellow and blue, and the white print background is a lot of fun. Making a simple baby quilt like this goes quickly and there's almost immediate gratification in completing a top within just a few hours of work.

This goes to the shop tomorrow for quilting and then will be on display within the next few weeks.

It's been raining here all week. Momcat is still struggling mightily to breathe. I've heard her mention the possibility of moving somewhere in the next few years where allergies, sinus problems and her asthma wouldn't flair up so much. Unfortunately, I don't think such a place exists on this earth.

GIVEAWAY #4 CLOSED -- All the entries for Giveaway #4 are closed and I'll pick a winner soon. Thanks for joining in my birthday celebration. Linda, I'll be sending out your Giveaway #3 win early next week.

Now, go to your room and sew for at least 15 minutes. I mean it!

The winner of this giveaway will receive all of the scrapbooking papers you see here, plus the album and two sets of stickers.

To enter:

1. Leave a comment on this post for 1 entry.
2. Become a follower for two more entries.

I LOVE VISITORS!

I love visitors to my blog, but I like them even more in person. Cathy of Cat in the Sewing Room paid me a visit last week. She and Momcat were going out to dinner with Jill. See how Cathy is smart enough to position herself for a head butt! She's welcome to my sewing room anytime.

Cathy was going through some of her books as part of a decluttering process. Look at the ones she's sharing with Momcat!

The past couple of days Momcat has been working on a baby quilt as a sample for the shop. It's blue and yellow. Once we get a little further along, we'll share a picture with you.

May all your kibble be fresh,
Piwacket

Great Contest!

Another blogger is having a super contest. I'd love to win everything, but as always, I like to share with my blogging buddies. Good luck!

Sew-Fantastic

http://sew-fantastic.blogspot.com/2009/09/1000-etsy-sales-giveaway.html

Cutest Towel Ever

There's a talented, nice lady who lives in Central Ohio named Lesley Bresler. Momcat met Lesley at a craft fair in Findlay,Ohio and loved everything that Lesley makes. You've seen hooded towels before, but the ones that Lesley makes uses really quality toweling, and she creates the cutest designs.

Now, other family members of ours don't read my blog (Philistines!) so I'm safe to share with you a Christmas gift that's going to one of our littlest beans.

Raggedy Ann consented to modeling the towel for you. Isn't she a doll? (groan)

The back includes the elephant's tail.

And here's the matching washcloth.

I have strong feelings about supporting small business owners and cottage industries. Lesley does a fantastic job at a reasonable price. If you visit her or place an order, tell her I sent you! Take a look at her website to find a whole darling menagerie of goodies.

Woobies and Bagoos by Lesley Bresler

Now I'm off to help Momcat make something with home dec fabric. We never use home dec fabric for anything, so I'm curious (always) about what we're doing with it.

I'll post soon about this week's giveaway. And it turns out that Linda does have a blog. You can visit her at Linda's Lines and Loves. Thanks for sending your info, Linda!

Giveaway Three Winner Is.......

Linda, step right up and send me your email address! You're the winner of our Week #3 Giveaway!
Linda doesn't have a blog as yet, but she's nice enough to follow several. Maybe we can inspire her to start her own.

Linda is a fellow teacher. Any lady with the same name as my Momcat has to be a good bean, right!?

It's great to see all of our new followers. Remember, there are still four more giveaways to go in my 7-week-long celebration. And you can win more than once!

I'll be writing a longer post later today. Right now I need to get a little more cat-napping in.

Week #3 Giveaway

Momcat's been making the same sounds I do when I'm coughing up a hairball. She has something called asthma and allergies. Just today she started perking up a bit and made it to work.

We've heard from our previous winners and their prizes will be mailed out to them next week. Congratulations again Carol and Swooze!

We're into Week #3 of my 7-week birthday celebration.

This week's giveaway is for Followers only. So if you're already a follower of this blog, you're already entered! If you'd like to have a chance to win, just press the Follow button on the sidebar.

Since Maggie was nice enough to pick out some cat fabric last week, I'm returning the favor by unloadi.....umm, sharing, some DAWG fabric with you. There are three fat quarters, enough to get you started on making a small fabric box. Don't know how to make a fabric box? No worries!

You'll also receive Fast Fun & Easy Fabric Boxes (from the same folks who taught you how to make a fabric bowl). You can get the technique downpat just in time for the holidays! And don't forget to let your kitty friends test out the box. You know how we like climbing into your projects and doing our quality control.

The drawing will be held this Sunday, September 13. As long as you're a Follower by noon EST on Sunday 9/13, you're in!!!

Purrin' along,
Pi

Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner!!

First of all, I've been overwhelmed with the interest in our seven fat quarter giveaway. Momcat and I, as well as the other warm-blooded household members, have been blessed with many things. It's exciting to see that our crazy little piece of this world is bringing some fun and joy into yours. Thank you all for visiting. I think it really is more fun to give than to receive (although it sure is fun to win occasionally, too!)

For this drawing, Sundance volunteered to pick the name. Notice we needed a bigger bowl this time thanks to all of you lovely people. First she sniffs out the winning slip of paper.

Then she has to give it the taste test. Hmmm, is this person worthy?

Apparently, she's happy with her choice.

I know the picture is really blurry. Sometimes it's hard for the Pi-cam to keep up with Sunny!
So you'll have to trust me when I tell you the name on the paper is Swooze.

Congratulations, Swooze! According to Sundance, your name smells like catnip.

Swooze has a blog also. You can visit her at Swooze's Quilts and Tall Tales.

Don't forget...we'll have another giveaway next week.

Weekend Plans

Although it's a holiday weekend in the US for Labor Day, Momcat has lots of hunting and gathering to do outside the house. Tomorrow is Open House at Best Friends Quilt Shoppe. Right after work she's meeting friends for dinner. Then back to work all day on Sunday. Thankfully, we'll have her at home on Monday. I plan to follow her around all day so that she'll give me some laptime in between catching up on vacuuming, dusting and laundry.

Sometimes We Sew

Most of the posts lately have been of household happenings or promoting giveaways. Momcat spends a minimum of 20 minutes everyday working on some kind of craft project. Sometimes it's quilting, other times it's cross-stitching or needlepoint. Occasionally it's scrapbooking. And she's going to take a knitting class soon.

One of the things we're not so good about doing is taking pictures of projects in process. Especiallly since there are times that Momcat puts her own projects away because it's time to make a sample for the shop.

Although quilting is our primary hobby, I'm thinking we might start to blog about and picture some other creative passions as well.

Always a holiday for me,
Piwacket

Fiber Fabrications Giveaway

I'm working hard to make sure that I can find as many giveaways for you to enter as possible! Whenever I personally come across one I could just keep it to myself, you know. Instead I'd rather follow through on the philosophy of most quilters and crafters...share our love and creativity.

If you like pincushions, you'll just love the one you'll find at Fiber Fabrications. It is so cute! For a chance to win it, go to her blog and enter. When you leave a comment, please let her know that you found her site through me.

I'm ecstatic to see how many of you are entering the fat quarter giveaway. I think I'm seeing how the giveaway equation works.

Small bag + regional university fabric = Not much interest.

7 fat quarters = Loads of responses.

I'm really loving your comments!

Another Blogger Giveaway

I'm thrilled that so many of you are entering my giveaway! This is so much fun for me. Really!

Check out We Love Quilting! for a surprise September giveaway. It never ceases to amaze me how generous quilters are with their time and talent. Have fun visiting, and especially looking at the fabric postcards.

Also, visit Quilts By Lee for an opportunity to win some lovely blue fabric. Actually, I'm really hoping they wind up at our house, but aren't I nice to give you a chance at them, too!

This Week's Giveaway

For this week's Birthday Giveaway we let Maggie pick out the fabrics. Don't worry...they're poot-free. For a DAWG I think she did a pretty good job.

Here's a closer look at the selection.

You have a chance to win these seven fat quarters in honor of my 7th birthday and 7th anniversary with Momcat. You'll get the cat focus fabric and six coordinating fat quarters.

You know what to do:

  • Comment on this post for one entry.
  • Comment on your blog for another entry.
  • Post a link to The Quilting Cat from your blog for a third entry.
Remember that I must have an email address so that I can contact you. I don't have any way of contacting Carol C. regarding the last giveaway so her Bearcats bag and fabric will patiently wait for her response.

I'll pick the winner on Friday night. Good luck everyone!

Don't Sit Downwind

We all know nicknames of the famous and infamous. Honest Abe, Buffalo Bill, Machine Gun Kelly, Typhoid Mary...I'm sure you can think of several others.

Meet Methane Maggie.

Fortunately, Methane Maggie's bouts with flatulence are infrequent, but when she gets them the miasma created will send you to the nearest window. The term "silent but deadly" has been uttered on more than one occasion. Particularly pungent poots require not only opening the window, but a scented tissue over the nose as well.

Here's the thing...my siblings and I don't pass gas. We are far too dignified for that. (We will not discuss the dignity involved in licking my own privates at this juncture). So when Maggie has a zephyr, we consider it just one more way in which we are far superior to the canine species.

I overheard Momcat talking about possibly introducing some veggies to Maggie's diet. NOOOO!

Aromatically yours,
Pi

Giveaway Winner Picked

Thank you to everyone for visiting and for those of you who entered our first giveaway to celebrate my 7th birthday and 7th anniversary with Momcat. Don't forget that there will be six more prizes and six more chances to win over the next six weeks. Winning one prize DOES NOT eliminate you from entering the other giveaway drawings.

The first giveaway was for the Bearcats bag and 1/2 yard of U.C. Bearcats fabric.

The entries were put into a bowl.

And I picked a name.

Congratulations to Carol C.! Carol, please send an e-mail to me at L.Stichtenoth@gmail.com with your snail mail address. Also, be sure to let us know if you have a dog, cat or other animal friend. We'll put in a little something extra for them if you do.

Trouble! Get your nose out of the bowl! We don't have a second place winner. If you want to be involved next time, maybe I'll let you pick for the second giveaway which will be announced later this week.

Purrs,
Piwacket
